Supporting Our Community: Motor Neurone Disease Association

At its heart, Sussex Bonfire is about bringing people together and giving back to the community. Each year, Firle Bonfire Society is proud to raise funds and awareness for causes that touch the lives of our members, families, and neighbours.

For 2026, we are dedicating our fundraising efforts to the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).

Why This Cause Is Close to Our Hearts

Motor neurone disease is a rapidly progressing, life-shortening condition that attacks the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. It has no cure, and it can affect anyone at any time.

For our society and village, this cause is profoundly personal:

  • We experienced its devastating impact firsthand with the loss of our father in the 1980s, back when so little was understood about this cruel illness.
  • Today, two dear members of our own local community are courageously navigating their own MND journeys.

Their strength inspires us, and it makes our mission to support the MND Association deeply meaningful to everyone involved with Firle Bonfire.

About the MND Association

The MND Association’s sole purpose is to serve and support everyone affected by motor neurone disease:

  • Providing vital day-to-day care, equipment, and emotional guidance for people living with MND.
  • Offering dedicated support networks and respite for carers, partners, children, and friends.
  • Funding cutting-edge medical research to discover effective treatments and, ultimately, find a cure.

How You Can Help

Every ticket bought, torch lit, and coin dropped into a collection bucket on Bonfire Night helps us make a tangible difference:

  • On the Night (Saturday, 24th October): Look out for our official charity collectors with MND buckets along the procession route and inside the event field at Firle Park.
  • Donate Online: Visit the official MND Association website to discover more about their groundbreaking research and how your donations change lives.
